Actually, I didn't think, "What an idiot!" I just threw that in for effect. What I thought was closer to, "Poor sot."
It may be that they only make the call if you have baggage on the plane because if your baggage blows up they figure it's only fair that you blow up with it. I seem to remember that it at least used to be the case that if you didn't board, they would remove your luggage from the plane before takeoff.
