Bonzai Ballet

Today I went to Bonzai Ballet, a class (sort of) in which we practiced the form of dance called "contact improvisation."  Contact improvisation is not easy to define, though someone has made a bit of an effort to do so here.  These verbs give you a bit of an idea of what it's about:  falling, supporting, balancing, flying, rolling, lifting, sliding, spinning, waving (like grain, not like the Queen).  When I do it, a bit of swing dancing always seems to find its way in.  That is, when I'm dancing with one other person.  With contact improv you can also dance alone or with two or more other people.

Most of the people in the class are regulars from BodyChoir.  BodyChoir is like contact improv but with more structure, especially in the musical program, which goes through a definite progression.  One of its rules is "No Talking!"  Nonverbal vocalizations are okay.  BodyChoir is heavy medicine.  I expect I will have more to say about it in the future.

I keep getting invited to Body Choir. Do you recommend it?

I do recommend it and the first time is free so how can you lose? I recommend Sunday morning for the first time because it is the best attended. Friday evening is the most poorly attended. Wednesday usually has a good crowd. If you only like structured dancing, like ballroom, then you might not enjoy it. If you like movement in general and interaction with lots of people, then you probably will enjoy it.
